Congratulations to Andy Boone of Laguna Beach for winning Bike of the Month with his 1980 Harley Davidson XR750.
Andy won a Mr. Pete's Grill gift certificate provided by Mr. Pete's Grill. This was Andy's second time to our meet with his XR750, he came once
before over a year ago.
This bike has a great story and it all starts with Andy buying it brand new back in 1980. The final year that Harley Davidson sold complete XR750 models. After that you could only buy the engines and components. Born and bred a racing machine, Andy raced it for four years in Oklahoma and Texas.
Andy road raced it from 1981 until 1984 and won the regional Battle of Twins in Oklahoma in 1983. After that the bike went into storage in his warehouse as he pursued other interests including auto racing.
The bike was restored around 15 years ago by Carl Patrick in Ohio who is considered to be the worlds best XR tuners.
No electric or kick start, this bike has to be bump started. It's fitted with massive Dellorto PHM38 carburetors and triple disk brakes. (However the calipers look tiny to me by today's standards).
Thanks Andy for bringing it to our meet. See all the photos in our February Gallery.
