Congratulations to Mogens Fredlow of Huntington Beach for winning Bike of the Month with his 1953 Nimbus 750 Sport.
This only the third Nimbus ever at our meet. This Danish brand is not well known in the US, so when they show up, they turn heads. Mogens has owned the Nimbus since 1983 and the restoration this year was supposed to be a suprise for his 75th birthday. His grandson Kai rode the bike to the meet today for the first time.
Bishop Chopper in Bishop CA, finished the restoration about 6 months ago. They are currently working on restoring it's sidecar.
The overhead cam inline 4 engine was designed in 1938 and continued through 1958 when Nimbus production ended. Although popular in Denmark, Mogens told me that sales fell due to the introduction of the Volkswagen Beetle which sold for about the same price.
A couple of unique features of the Nimbus are it's flat steel frame and the rubber band rear suspension. Unlike other motorcycles the Nimbus does not use tubing for the frame making it a very unique styled bike. The rear suspension consists of strong rubber bands stretched between two posts. Mogens told me that you can purchase stronger bands if you weigh over 200 pounds.
It's a treat to see the mid century Danish engineering in this bike.
Thank you Mogens and Kai for bringing it to our meet. View all the photos in our January Gallery.
