March Vintage Bike OC Meet
1916 Harley shifter

Huntington Beach, Calif. - After all the rain and the threat today, we had really great weather for our meet. Many newer bikes but still plenty of vintage steel, iron and alumininum to look at. After all was counted we had 75 bikes show up spanning 103 years of motorcycling history.

Ken "Smokey" Elford, 1947 - 2019
Ken Smokey Elford
I've just learned from Tom Lovejoy's Facebook post that we lost Smokey Elford on March 5, 2019. Smokey was a fine machinist and mechanic at his shop in Long Beach and was very highly regarded for his knowlege of Indian and Harley Davidsons. For the past six years I sat with Smokey and Bob Nichols in our researved seats in row one at Costa Mesa Speedway. I'm deeply saddened by this news. We just lost Bob a few months ago. I don't have any more detail at this time.

Bike of the Month - Todd Cameron
Todd Cameron and his 1916 Harley Davidson JD
Congratulations to Todd Cameron of Pasadena for winning Bike of the Month with his 1916 Harley Davidson JD. Todd won the Bike of the Month plaque provided by Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys. www.RussBrown.com.

This was Todd's first time attending our meet and he didn't even show up until 3:05 after many votes had been cast. I'm sure that if he'd shown up earlier there would have been no contest.

Todd rode down from Pasadena and took the wrong freeway and passed us by before finally finding the meet. I'm glad he made it when he did, because his bike is definitely one of a kind.

Second Place - Rich Romano
Rich Romano and his 1963 Cushman Trailster
Rich Romano of Yorba Linda came in Second with his 1963 Cushman Trailster.

Rich owned a Cushman Trailster when he was young. He wanted a sportier bike, but his dad came home with a Cushman. He has owned this bike for 13 years and customized it top to bottom including boosting the power of the 320cc motor from 8HP to 12HP.

Third Place - Vince Driscoll
Vince Driscoll and his 1970 Norton Commando 750
Vince Driscoll of Long Beach took Third place with his custom 1970 Norton Commando 750.

Vince bought the Norton in 2014 as a barn find. This is the second iteration of his restoration/customization. He's had at the meet in the past with a slightly different look and color.

Honorable Mention
Rod Maralit of Irvine came in a close Fourth with his custom 1984 BMW R65LS. Rod has been coming to our meet for a few months with this build and always manages to gather some votes.

Thanks to everyone for showing up and making this another great event despite the weather. A special thanks to the team, Tom & Debbie Hopkins and Tink Tinkler. Next month's meet is April 14, 2019. I'll be working at the Long Beach Grand Prix in April. Tom, Debbie & Tink are going to stand in and take over all the duties. It should be a great meet!

Keep On Ridin',
