Congratulations to Marty Spalding of Dana Point for winning Bike of the Month with his 1968 Norton/ Matchless P11.
Rich won a trophy provided by Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys.
One of 500 manufactured in 1968 & 69, this rare bike was prototyped by Californian Norton Distributor Bob Blair specifically for So. Cal. desert racing.
It has a Matchless G85 CS (Competition Scrambles) Reynolds 531 lightweight steel frame with a Norton Atlas 650cc engine.
Wikipedia Norton P11 Article
Marty has owned the P11 since April, and just finished the restoration process.
According to Marty, one story has it that a guy went into the dealer to buy a P11, and was upset with the Matchless badging, he wanted a Norton.
So the dealer rolled the bike in the back, an installed the Norton badging and returned with the same bike. Appearently the bikes came with both badges.
Thank you Marty for bringing your Norton/Matchless for all of us to see. See all the photos in our August Gallery.
