Bob has owned the Velocette since January.
Per Bob & Chet:
1936 Velocette KSS 500cc Custom
- The KSS was Velocette's Super Sports model
- 480cc air-cooled OHC single-cylinder engine -- modified 348cc engine with a longer stroke, spacer under cylinder barrel
- Amal carburetor
- BTH magneto ignition
- 4-speed manual gearbox, right side foot shift
- Brooklands-style polished silencer with drilled fishtail tip
- Webb girder front fork, rigid rear frame
- 7-inch single-leading shoe front and rear brakes
The KSS is renowned as a machine of quality and terrific performance that was hand-built in a small family factory firm in Birmingham,
England, and proved to be a giant-killer in racing.
The KSS model dates back to 1925, when Veloce Ltd. stunned the world with its new overhead-camshaft sports machine dubbed the Model K. The Model K was soon racing and winning everything it entered, as factory-tuned examples exceeded 100 MPH and handled peerlessly, winning the Isle of Man Junior TT from 1927-29.
Those winning machines were hardly different from production roadsters, and anyone could tune their K for high performance with an open pipe, a hot cam, and a high-compression piston—all available from the factory as tuning spares.
This 1936 Velocette KSS is a Hot Rod motorcycle that was purchased from the Urban S. Hirsch III Collection in Beverly Hills, CA.
The engine capacity has been bumped from the stock 349cc to 480cc by lengthening the stroke, as implied by the longer, custom aluminum cylinder barrel, which was a rare but known modification in the 1940s and ‘50s.
They have won Bike of the Month
three times in the past.
