Congratulations to John Blaty of Gilbert Arizona for winning Bike of the Month with his 1969 Sears SR124. John brought the bike all the way from Arizona for our meet. I'm glad he was recognized for his effort.
This bike was built for Sears and Roebuck, Co. by Gilera in Italy. John bought it from his brother Kevin who is also a member of our group. Kevin bought the bike 13 years ago from the original owner.
The original owner put 10 miles on it before he decided to buy a Harley. The bike sat for 30 years under a tarp in a garage. Although it ran when Kevin bought it, the engine didn't have any oil in it. He tore down the engine and thoroughly cleaned all the varnish out of the crankcase and gears.
The paint was gone and handlbars were badly rusted. Kevin painted the tank and fenders and replaced the bars. The bike still has the original Pirelli tires and handle bar grips even after 700 miles.
The SR124 is a 124cc single four stroke engine with a right shift 5 speed transmission.
There are plenty of pictures in our December Gallery. Thank you John and Kevin for bringing it to the meet.
