Ed Kretz, Jr. and Ed Kretz, Sr, Daytona 1955 |

After a couple of weeks of high heat in Orange County, it cooled of enough to have a great meet today. Even though it was cooler, the competition for Bike of the Month was HOT. For the first time ever we had a tie for first place and today it was a 4 way tie.
Ed Kretz, Jr. #33, 1932-2013
Bob Nichols told me today that he had just received a call that his friend and Motorcycle Hall of Fame racer Ed Kretz, Jr. died today in a motorcycle accident in Colorado.
I don't have any other details, but a brief web search has turned up other confirmations of his passing. Ed was the son of Ed Kretz, Sr. Here's a link to his AMA page:

We had a great turnout of 88 bikes, with so many cool ones that the voting was spread very thin. The 4 way tie was ended in a second vote, and a second count that included only the top four bikes. Even the second vote was very close.
Bike of the Month
First timer Marcus Davin of Newport Beach took First place with his perfect 1966 BMW R50/2. Marcus won the $20.00 Beach Burger's gift certificate provided by Beach Burgers and The Scooter Solution. Many of the BMW votes went to Shawn Boeker of Garden Grove who was close to the top four with his 1966 BMW R60/2.
Second Place
Stanley Tang of Aliso Viejo also placed again with his custom 1982 Yamaha XV750 Virago. Looking nothing like it's beginnings, Stanley's bike always gets some votes.
Third Place
Always a bridesmaid... John Stone of Costa Mesa once again placed third with his custom 1969 BSA Lightning. Another crowd favorite.
Fourth Place
Normally we don't go down to 4th, but today was an exception. First timer Brian Stewart of Costa Mesa brought his radical 1959 Triumph Tiger T110. With it's 21 inch front wheel, this bike looked nothing like 1959.
It just goes to show you how this group like the stock bikes, but appreciates the customs too. You never know what's going to win.
