Huntington Beach, Calif. -
Today was the final meet at Beach Burgers. After more than five years of hosting our meets Beach Burgers closed their doors yesterday. We owe a debt of gratitude to June Lee the Owner for her support over these years. We are now on a hunt for a new venue. Many suggestions have been made and I'm sure we'll have something by January.
We had a great turnout today even with the restaurant closed. By 2:15 we had over 70 bikes and the final official count was 101 a great event for December.
Nick DiBenedetto of Huntington Beach who won Bike of the Month back in September with his 1964 twin engine Triumph Bonneville showed up today with another monster. He rode his Ford V8 Flathead powered motorcycle. Nick wasn't part of the competition for Bike of the Month, or he probably would have taken it again.
Bike of the Month
Baird Bergenthal of Midway City won first place with his 1957 Moto Beta. Baird put the 50cc bike back together from a basket case in the past two months.
Second Place
Mario Tafarella of Santa Barbara came in a close second with his Cushrod, a 1959 Cushman Eagle powered by a Honda 600 CBR engine. With all new suspension, the Cushrod has no problems handling the 600cc power. Mario showed up a few months ago with the Cushrod on the back of his truck, but he missed the meet by a few minutes due to traffic. I'm glad he made it down today.
Third Place Tie
Eugene Garcin of Hollywood brought another unique BMW down to the OC. His 1968 BMW R69US was one of 1100 made for the US market. This was the first year of telescoping forks and BMW brought them to the US first.
Longtime member Carl Felix of Costa Mesa tied for third with his pristene 1973 Norton Commando. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to talk to Carl more about his bike. I'm sure he'll bring it back.
