June Vintage Bike OC Meet
Honda Logo
Huntington Beach, Calif. - Another perfect So Cal afternoon at the beach. We had a great turnout today after the Bikes & Bombers event at the Lyon Air Museum. 112 people brought their bikes to Beach Burgers for a great meet. One of the few meets in the world to have two Norvins. Larry Horn brought both of his win a bar bet.

Brian Bell winner at Bikes & Bombers brought his 1937 Indian Chout over to our meet after he took his prize winning flight. The Chout is a Chief engine in a Scout frame. Built for speed, this one was originally built for off road use. It was Dewey Bunkrud's motorcycle. Dewey was a Trailblazer Hall of Fame member.

Bike of the Month
First Place went to Don Leonhardt of Long Beach with his highly customized 1977 Honda CB-750 cafe racer. Don won the $20.00 Beach Burger's gift certificate provided by Beach Burgers and The Scooter Solution. Don bought the bike in 2006 on E-Bay for $200.00. After a bit of polish, some custom bits and a little gold leaf he built a winner.

Second Place
Long time member Terry Hoiland of San Clemente took Second place with his 1968 BSA Lightning 650. Terry recently finished a great restoration.

Third Place Tie
There was a tie for Third place. Rick Hass of Lake Forest and his all original 1980 Honda CB-X 1000. Rick is the original owner of this bike and it looks like it just came from the showroom.

Ken Morris of Rancho Cucamonga tied for Third place with his recently finished 1970 Triumph T-120 650. Today was Ken's first time to our meet. There's always a chance he'll come back and win.

AMA Hall of Fame - Jody Nicholas
Today I had the great opportunity to meet Jody Nicholas, AMA Hall of Fame inductee. According to the AMA, "Jody Nicholas was one of Americas best road racers during the 1960s."

Jody has been to our meet before, but like so many of you I haven't had the opportunity to meet him. See the link above for his story. He was a BSA factory rider from 1960-66, Suzuki factory rider from 1970-72 and in 1971 was the ASCOT Season Champion on a Norton. In the 1990's he raced BMW motorcycles in the Battle of the Legends races. Since racing he's written for several motorcycling publications including Cycle Magazine and Motorcyclist.

It was a great meet today, talking to so many new people and discovering new things. I'm looking forward to July.

Our next meet is July 13, 2014. Many thanks again to Brian Tinkler shooting photos and Debbie and Tom Hopkins for helping with the votes. I'll see you all in July.

Keep On Ridin',
Joe Kagerer
