May Vintage Bike OC Meet
First Place Custom

Huntington Beach, Calif. - We had a happy Mother's Day today with a great meet. Even with a slight chance of rain, a little cooler weather and Mother's Day we managed to have 84 bikes show up at Mr. Pete's Grill. It started out strong with 43 bikes, and at 2:20 I realized that I had left my camera at home. Fortunately I'm only 10 minutes away so by 2:40 I was shooting my first photo.

Nichols Racing 1937 Indian Big Base Scout
Jim Ottele, Bob Nichols Racing rider, brought us a nice treat today by bringing Bob's 1937 Indian Big Base Scout (Number 53Y). Jim who is from Redlands, has been winning a lot of races this year with the Scout. I think the number is around 14. Jim started racing motocross in 1978 and moved over to flat track in 2000. He'll be racing this bike in Perris May 14th and 15th and then up in Sacramento on May 22nd. He'll also be riding a new Factory Indian in Sacramento. Bob won Bike of the Month back in October 2014 with this Scout.

Bike of the Month
Scott Derkum of San Clemente won Bike of the Month with his 1974 Norton Commando. Scott won a Mr. Pete's Grill gift certificate provided by Mr. Pete's Grill. This bike was build #35 in 2003 for Colorado Norton Works in Delores, CO. Read all about the Commando on our Bike of the Month page.

Second Place
Mark Cilani of Newport Beach came in Second place with racing 1974 Yamaha RD350. Almost always in the top three, Mark has placed twice before. Mark has owned the bike for a year and a half, and says it was originally one of Kenny Roberts racing bikes. It has a liquid cooled Banshee engine instead of the original air cooled RD 350 engine.

Third Place
First timer Jack Freeman from literally around the corner in Huntington Beach Third place restored 1971 Ossa Pioneer Enduro. A fairly rare bike from Spain, this could be the first Ossa we've ever had at Vintage Bike OC. He came to the meet last month without a bike, and determined to win, he bought this Ossa last week. It's a long way to go for a free lunch... Actually he's wanted an Ossa since he was a kid racing motocross in the mid 1970's finally last week the stars aligned. Hopefully he'll bring it back and win that free lunch.

Thanks to everyone for showing up and making this another great event and a special thanks to my team, Hobo John and Brian "Tink" Tinkler. Tom & Debbie Hopkins should be back next month. I'll see you next month on June 12, 2016.

Keep On Ridin',
